We focus on patient education and strive to remove silver/mercury fillings in a safe way. To accomplish this, we utilize the newest state-of-the-art protocols based on recommendations of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) which both Dr. Jenny and Dr. Kay are a part of.
What is SMART Amalgam Removal?
SMART stands for Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique. This protocol is designed to minimize mercury exposure to the patient, dental team and environment during the removal of old amalgam silver fillings.
Traditional silver fillings are made out of about 50% mercury, a known neurotoxin. While stable under normal conditions, mercury vapor can be released during drilling or removal. That’s where SMART comes in.
Why Choose SMART Removal?
- Protects your body from mercury exposure
- Follows IAOMT guidelines for safety and science
- Uses specialized equipment and filtration
- Supports whole-body health and detoxification
- Ideal for patients with chemical sensitivities or health concerns
We take every precaution to safely remove mercury-based fillings while protecting your airway, tissues and overall well-being.
Our SMART Removal Protocol Includes:
- Full protective gear – For the patient and dental team including masks, gowns/coats and face shields
- Dental dam isolation – Prevents particles from entering the mouth or being swallowed
- High volume suction and air filtration – Special suction systems (intraorally and extraorally) and air purifiers capture mercury vapor and particles
- External oxygen supply – Allows patients to breathe clean air during the procedure
- Continuous water irrigation – Keeps the filling cool to reduce vapor release
- Proper waste collection – safe handling and disposal of removed materials
After removal, we replace the old amalgam with biocompatible, tooth-colored BPA-free composite that is strong, natural-looking and free from harmful metals.
Why Replace Amalgam Fillings?
While the FDA considers dental amalgam generally safe, many patients choose to have them removed for health, cosmetic or personal reasons, including:
- Mercury sensitivity or chronic health conditions
- Cracked, leaking or corroded fillings
- A desire for a metal-free, holistic dental approach
- A more natural-looking smile
We’ll work with you to determine the safest timeline and approach for replacing your fillings
